EHHS relies on charitable donations to supplement funding from other sources. These sources include summer guide funding provided by one or more of the federal (Young Canada Works or Canada Summer Jobs) and provincial (SKILLS) programs designed to encourage hiring of youth. We also receive funding from the Municipality of East Hants, which provides funding through its Community Funding Program for the storage space in Elmsdale; funding through the municipal Tourism Grant enables us to remain open in September after guides have gone back to school and to undertake special programs or purchases, such as our sound system, new signage, rack card design work, a new roof and storm windows for the museum. The Society has no salaried staff.
How do we use your donations?
- Office supplies and supplies to conserve documents and artifacts
- Utilities—electricity, phone & internet
- Refreshments at program presentations
- Exhibit elements, such as framing, mounting of text or pictures for display
- Routine maintenance, including cleaning supplies or paint
We are also engaged in major projects to restore the exterior of the museum. Last season, we received a provincial Community Facilities Improvement Program grant that we used to remedy some structural issues and replace rotten sheathing and clapboard. This project is ongoing. Our major goal this year is to paint the building exterior; future plans include accessible entrance and washroom. Most sources of funding require a percentage cost share. Your donation will help us build our funds to make our applications for funding stronger.
